If an elephant is in the area, it will destroy and uproot trees and bushes for food and water.
Over time, the clearing of the land means that the elephants' food is more readily available and the space for other animals and plants is increased.
As a result, the number of animals and plants increases, and they subsequently eat the new growth which grows back more quickly.
By trampling or moving the ground, elephants are also able to aerate the soil which helps the growth of new plants.
